Monday 8th December 2014 - Little Wonders... A small update to the Little Wonders (Avengers on home video) section today to add a release to Chilean Unlicensed DVD, with thanks to Denis for pointing it out to me.

Saturday 29th November 2014 - Must-See Interview at Steedumbrella... For the last few weeks, I have been working with Denis Kirsanov of Steedumbrella and Christine Stutz of John Steed's Flat as we interviewed author Gabriel Hershman, who has of course written the excellent biography of Ian Hendry - Send in the Clowns (highly recommended!). The results are a great read (and I can say that as my part in the proceedings was periferal) and more than worth a visit to Russia! See the interview here. The interview premieres today and is presented in English, Russian and German (at John Steed's Flat).

Saturday 22nd November 2014 - Big Finish News + US Blu-ray... First off today, our Big Finish News page has been updated with the cover for the July 2015 release and news of the episodes to be included. Secondly, I've taken delivery of the US Blu-ray of Series 5 and I have to be honest, I think the complaints about the release are mostly misplaced. The sound is fine (certainly to a UK viewer like me, who is used to hearing the episodes very slightly sped up!), although the 5.1 remix, particularly of the opening and closing theme, is pretty dreadful. Picture quality is very good, and, remarkably, the compression issues expected are not noticeable. There are no extras, which is a definite minus, but this is definitely the best these episodes have looked anywhere, and certainly in the USA. The release is coded Region A, so Region B European importers, be very sure that you can play the discs before ordering.

Tuesday 11th November 2014 - US Blu-rays, The Curse Continues... Today saw the debut of The Avengers television series on the high definition Blu-ray format (the movie beat it past the post). This should of course be something to celebrate, but first impressions have not been encouraging. Jason Whiton has reported in his Spyvibe blog that the images are not entirely as they should be and also, maybe more importantly, the pitch of the sound is too high (mimicking "PAL speed-up" despite the video being authored at 24 frames per second). To me, it sounds like a temporal conversion from StudioCanal's 25fps 1080i masters have been made to create a 24fps version, and that the StudioCanal master still exhibits the incorrectly pitched sound that was later corrected for the UK DVDs. To add insult to injury, the episodes are contained on just three single-sided dual layer discs, meaning that bitrates will be necessarily lower than they should be. I am in the process of acquiring a copy to check for myself, but in the meantime, the details I can confirm now are included in the release entry in Little Wonders.

Saturday 18th October 2014 - With Umbrella, Scotch and Electronic Cigarettes The Declassified Bookstore now includes links to eBook versions of the new book by Richard McGinlay and myself, With Umbrella, Scotch and Cigarettes - Kindle, EPUB and PDF versions available. Purchasers preferring to go for print versions can save 15% on the book price with the discount code FWD15.

Reaction to the book has been very positive. A couple of reviews have appeared online this week, and we are very pleased with them!

Thursday 9th October 2014 - Big Finish News + Declassified Bookstore Those lovely people at Big Finish have shared the cover design for the forthcoming Volume 3 of The Avengers - The Lost Episodes - see Big Finish News.

Also, eagle-eyed visitors may have noticed a new link on the left - Declassified Bookstore. This is now fully working and provides information on books by Avengers Declassified writers. There are now two Avengers books available from us, and purchases help support the work of this site and make future titles books more likely. There's plenty of additional reading material - interviews and features about the books - linked from these pages. Both books are now available from Amazon sites around the world (paperback only - hardcovers remain Lulu.com exclusives).

Saturday 13th September 2014 - The Nice Rooms + Little Wonders To tie in with the launch of our new book With Umbrella, Scotch and Cigarettes (see update below), I've been interviewed by Gary Radice of The Nice Rooms. Please do take a look. A reference to the interview has been added to Avengerweb 2014 and, with the valued help of Denis Kirsanov of Steedumbrella and Mike Richardson, I have also been able to update home video section The Little Wonders with a few previously elusive covers - one is of particular interest - the Spanish VHS cover for The New Avengers: Target! Quite possibly the most inaccurate Avengers home video cover ever! We have also opened the books on the Blu-ray format, with pages for French Blu-ray, German Blu-ray, UK Blu-ray and USA Blu-ray. These pages will be updated as and when we receive information about these exciting releases.

Tuesday 9th September 2014 - Book Launch! A big day for The Avengers Declassified today as we issue our second Avengers book, With Umbrella, Scotch and Cigarettes. Richard McGinlay and I have been working on this solidly for six months, beginning with researches we had made for the website and then taking them to another level entirely. The book has large swathes of exclusive material, never before published - anywhere - and represents the definitive account of the production of Series 1. There's more to it than that, including chapters on unmade storylines, further adventures, and lengthy essays about the creation of the series and how Series 1 came to a premature end, losing its star actor. The book is available from Lulu only at the moment, though it will be sold via Amazon eventually as well.

If you're interested in picking up the book, don't forget to use the promo code SHOP20 to save 20% on the advertised prices (expires 16th September).

Wednesday 3rd September 2014 - Sleeper Filming... Thanks to Bob Rocca, who has kindly shared a photo from the filming of Sleeper which reveals that it was filming beyond our previously confirmed 'Production Completed' date of September 1976. Take a look at the Sleeper Episode Guide page for details. In other news, the new book that Richard McGinlay and I have been working on, With Umbrella, Scotch and Cigarettes, will be available within a week. Please check back for details. Here's a little teaser:

Sunday 13th July 2014 - Howell and Wadham, the new Avengers... To celebrate the release of Volume 2 of Big Finish's acclaimed The Avengers - The Lost Episodes series, we have added the newly-released episodes to the Big Finish episode guide. This means there are now episode guide pages for their versions of Ashes of Roses, Please Don't Feed the Animals, The Radioactive Man and Dance with Death. Big Finish News has also been updated and includes links to teaser audio clips from two of the new plays.

Tuesday 1st July 2014 - From the makers of Cold Water Omo... It's not often that we have an update about the radio series, but today we have one! Ron Geddes and I have concocted something between us that shouldn't be taken too seriously... as we turn the spotlight on the radio series' announcers, complete with sound clips. Thanks to Ron for his hard work on this.

Friday 20th June 2014 - Avengerweb... Two new websites, John Steed's Flat and The Velvet Web (containing an Avengers fanfic story, The Secrets Trust) have today been added to Avengerweb 2014.

Monday 9th June 2014 - Latest News from Big Finish... The second Lost Stories CD set is due very soon, so take a look at the News Page which has a new photo of Steed and Keel in their civvies.

Saturday 7th June 2014 - Two Authors in Search of Free Time... Apologies for the distinct lack of updates recently, the reason for which is a few months of exhaustive work by Richard McGinlay and myself on our new Avengers book, which is expected to be ready in July 2014. It will look at Series 1 from the perspectives of production, transmission and reaction, and is currently over 350 pages and growing still. The downside of writing the book is that it has dominated our attention and our time, and consequently the website has suffered. Hopefully once the book is published, everyone will agree that our hard work was worth it! Anyway, I've taken a morning off from writing and researching to update Declassified. So, I must thank Arco van Os for supplying a UK VHS Avenging the Avengers cover with Linda Thorson's name spelt correctly (!), Denis Kirsanov for finding a previously elusive French VHS cover (cassette 3, box set 9) and also, for my favourite Little Wonders page, USA Unlicensed VHS, a previously unavailable DeGregory VHS cover for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Station. Denis has also provided a few Avengerweb tweaks which affect 1999, 2001, 2010 and 2013. Between us, Denis and I have also added two new pages to Little Wonders, which document the naughty DVD goings-on in Chile and promotional VCDs released in Greece. Finally, the UK DVD page has been updated with a recent reissue of the 39-disc complete collection by StudioCanal.

Thursday 24th April 2014 - Bowler Hats and Kinky Boots... Exciting times for Avengers fans just got that bit more exciting, for my friend Mike Richardson has a book coming out in June that I heartily recommend. I know how hard and long Mike has toiled over this exhaustive tome, and can't wait to see the results. The book is being published by Telos Books and is available for pre-order from them. Here's the PR:

"This is the most in-depth reference work about the '60s TV series The Avengers.

It covers all aspects of the show, going through the production episode by episode, with full behind-the-scenes details. Assembled from ABC Television documentation, including daily progress reports and internal letters and memos, to give a complete day by day picture of how the series progressed from videotape to film and from black and white to colour. In addition, the author has spoken and corresponded with many people who worked on the series, to give the fullest picture yet of how this classic and stylish British production was assembled.

This volume also covers The New Avengers, the South African radio series, the stage play and the 1998 feature film."

Wednesday 9th April 2014 - The Avengers book I wrote with Richard McGinlay and Alys Hayes is currently available at a 15% discount with the promotional code FWD15...

Sunday 30th March 2014 - The Hex Files... Richard McGinlay takes a look at the episode that was so good, they made it twice - Warlock. His episode guide includes full reproductions of the scenes excised from the original version.

Friday 28th March 2014 - Blue Box Materialises (No, Not That One!)... Have a gander at Big Finish News, where you can see the newly-released cover art for the next Lost Episodes box set as well as listen to a trailer for it, too!

Wednesday 19th March 2014 - One for the MP3... Our coverage of the first volume of The Avengers - The Lost Episodes from Big Finish comes to a close today (bar a couple of tweaks to come) with a series of detailed notes regarding the adaptation of One for the Mortuary, written by Richard McGinlay and myself. Don't forget to get those pre-orders in for the second volume, due in July - order here from Big Finish.

Tuesday 11th March 2014 - I Think I Must Be Dreaming... Delighted to pass along an incredible piece of PR from Big Finish. My dreams are quite literally coming true. Remarkable!

Monday 10th March 2014 - Don't Cross the Cardinal... Thanks to Richard, who has added some further notes to my own concerning the Big Finish adaptation of Square Root of Evil.

Sunday 2nd March 2014 - Brought to Audiobook! Finally, The Avengers Declassified is settled in its new home - a town where The Avengers was filmed, rather appropriately - and things here can at last start getting back to normal! We get back into the swing of things with a deeper look at the Big Finish audiobooks of Hot Snow and Brought to Book, submitted by Richard McGinlay.

Monday 10th February 2014 - While the waiting game on the house move continues, I am continuing to distract myself from reality by pottering around on Declassified! To begin with today, with thanks to Denis Kirsanov and Jamie Murrie, I've added a page to Little Wonders concerning Australian VHS. There's also been further work today on USA Unlicensed VHS, French VHS and French DVD.

Sunday 9th February 2014 - A significant update today... My apologies for the infrequency of updates at the moment, but I am in the process of moving home and my attention is mostly on that. Hopefully by the middle of the year things will be back to normal, but I will endeavour to update when possible. Today, I have to thank Ron Geddes for supplying Ministry Verdict reviews of 14 Avengers Radio Series episodes - The Fantasy Game, The Quick-Quick Slow Death, Get-A-Way!, A Deadly Gift, The Super Secret Cypher Snatch, Not to Be Sneezed At, Who Shot Poor George / XR40?, A Grave Charge, All Done By Mirrors, The Morning After, Straight from the Shoulder, A Case of Interrogation, Too Many Olés and Escape in Time (Version 2). There are also reviews added to the remaining episodes, and these were all previously published at my old site, Avengers on the Radio and feature the thoughts of Susan B. Grassino, Martin Holder, Andrew Pixley, David K. Smith, David Tulley and James Lincoln Warren. I have also found a place for the Series Overview that I wrote with Alys Hayes for the old AOR site. As if that wasn't enough for one day, thanks to Denis Kirsanov for prompting updates to Avengerweb 2013 and 2014 (a new page), and supplying video cover images for Little Wonders pages: French VHS, Spanish VHS, USA Unlicensed VHS and USA DVD (to add the wholly disappointing Emma Peel Megaset reissue from Lionsgate). Finally, sincere thanks to Jaz Wiseman and the Estate of the late designer Paul Bernard for allowing me to share something quite extraordinary - two production drawings from the lost episode Kill the King, which can be found on the Series 1 Archive page.

Wednesday 5th February 2014 - Further to the update of 31st January, The Strange Case of the Missing Episodes - The Lost Stories of The Avengers Series 1 is now available in Kindle format (click here for international order links). It's been called "easily the best Avengers book to date", so don't miss out (see our reviews).

Additionally, you can save 14% on the price of any book or EPUB/PDF eBook until 14th February with the discount code AMOR14 which should be entered during Lulu checkout. Remember that all purchases via the Hidden Tiger website benefit The Avengers Declassified. Please note that this code cannot be used at Amazon and therefore Kindle prices cannot be similarly reduced.

Friday 31st January 2014 - A quick heads-up to publicise the release today of digital editions of the book that I wrote last year with Richard McGinlay and Alys Hayes. As well as hardcovers and paperbacks of The Strange Case of the Missing Episodes - The Lost Stories of The Avengers Series 1, it is now possible to purchase eBooks in EPUB and PDF formats (direct order links in the box above).

A Bit of Chelsea Noir for Yer Lug'oles!
First off, a very happy new year to all visitors and contributors to The Avengers Declassified!
