THE AVENGERS: THE LOST EPISODES, VOLUME 5 - RELEASED TODAY!

Steed, Keel and Carol assemble for four new recreations of the Sixties classic!

Originally transmitted in 1961, The Avengers was a groundbreaking crime adventure series, following the activities of John Steed, a suave secret agent investigating Britain's strangest crimes - aided by the dashing Dr David Keel. Together, they pitted themselves against the underworld's most devious and colourful villains.

Sadly, 24 of the 26 episodes of the first series no longer exist; but Big Finish have revisited these missing episodes in a series of audio box sets, starring Anthony Howell as Dr Keel, Julian Wadham as Steed, and Lucy Briggs-Owen as Carol Wilson.

Now available to buy on CD and download, The Avengers – The Lost Episodes: Volume 5 brings to life four more classic episodes, adapted by John Dorney, Dan Starkey, Rae Leaver and Phil Mulryne.

5.1 Nightmare by Dan Starkey, from a storyline by Terence Feely
When one of his patients, an experimental scientist, goes missing, Dr Keel ends up impersonating him. But not all doctors are on the side of the angels.

5.2 Girl on the Trapeze by Dennis Spooner, adapted by Rae Leaver
The circus has come to town - but after Keel witnesses an apparent suicide, it becomes clear that the clowns are concealing something sinister behind the scenes.

5.3 Crescent Moon by Phil Mulryne, from a storyline by Geoffrey Bellman and John Whitney
On a Caribbean Island, Steed finds himself caught up in a curious case of kidnapping, where if he wants to save a missing girl, he's got to find out what's really going on... and quickly.

5.4 Diamond Cut Diamond by John Dorney, from a storyline by Max Marquis
A smuggling ring is leaving a trail of bodies in its wake. Steed goes undercover as an air steward to investigate, but can he confront the culprit before it's his head on the block?

Starring Anthony Howell, Julian Wadham, Lucy Briggs-Owen, Stephen Critchlow, Harry Long, Bryan Pilkington, Jane Slavin, John Banks, Paul Thornley, Miranda Raison, Chris Porter, Tracy Wiles, Robbie Stevens, Faye Castelow, Anjella Mackintosh, Dan Starkey, Jot Davies, Damien Lynch, Luis Soto, Alice Haig, Helen Goldwyn and Justin Avoth, The Avengers – The Lost Episodes: Volume 5 is available to buy and download today from the Big Finish website.

Four previous volumes of Lost Episodes also be ordered today, with Volume 6 and Volume 7 available to pre-order. And remember, when you choose to buy this release on CD directly from Big Finish, you will also unlock instant access to a digital copy for download.

LEONARD WHITE (1916-2016)

It is with great sadness that we at Big Finish add our voice to the tributes for Leonard White, who has died aged 99.

Leonard was well known for his brilliant work in television as producer, working on many episodes of such series as Police Surgeon, Out of This World and Armchair Theatre. He will however be best remembered for his work as co-creator of The Avengers.

John Dorney, script editor and lead writer for Big Finish's range of Avengers titles, writes in tribute:

"In all the work we do at Big Finish we stand on the shoulders of giants. And none more so than Leonard White.

The original producer of The Avengers, Leonard was a name I got very used to hearing during my work on our adaptations. A lot of details not present in the publicity materials we used as references were supplied instead by his crystal clear memories. The telesnap reconstructions so useful in indicating the tone of the missing episodes were often voiced by Leonard himself.

Great shows don't happen by accident. Exploring the variety of stories across his work on the series has really helped me appreciate the man's work - it's clear that a very strong and imaginative mind was at the helm of the series. His innovations and inspirations all helped mark the series out, and without his vision I doubt we'd still be watching the series today. Thank you for everything, Leonard."

OLIVIA POULET IS EMMA PEEL!

Big Finish is delighted to announce the casting of Olivia Poulet in the role of Mrs Emma Peel, for the upcoming release of The Avengers: Steed and Mrs Peel - with Julian Wadham returning as John Steed!

One of the most iconic female characters in British television history, Emma Peel was originally portrayed by Diana Rigg in the classic crime-fighting series, appearing alongside Patrick Macnee as John Steed. The new series resurrects the characters in eight full-cast audio adaptations of The Avengers comic strips, originally published in Diana from 1966 to 1967.

"We spent many months trying to find our Mrs Peel," says producer David Richardson. "There were so many contenders for the part, and we gave it a lot of time because it is such a huge part of our TV heritage. Then, one day, Olivia Poulet was at the studio recording a Doctor Who audio. I happened to catch her chatting in the green room... and there was enough of Mrs Peel to make my ears prick up. Before long we had handed her some script pages and she was doing her audition - one that she passed with flying colours!"

"I am really thrilled to have the opportunity to play Emma Peel - one of the most iconic and charismatic female characters of British sci-fi and fantasy," says Olivia. "I can't wait to get started!"

Olivia is well known for her role in The Thick of It, in which she played regular Emma Messinger. Her other appearances include Sherlock, Reggie Perrin, Outnumbered and Without You.

Olivia will be joined by Julian Wadham as John Steed, who has portrayed the role to great acclaim in Big Finish's The Avengers: The Lost Episodes, which recreates the TV show’s first season.

You can pre-order The Avengers: The Comic Strip Adaptations Volume 1 and Volume 2 today, with a graphic novel of the orginal strips also available. You can pick up all three titles as part of a physical or digital bundle.

PATRICK MACNEE (1922-2015)

It is with great sadness that we add our voice to the tributes for Patrick Macnee, who has died aged 93.

Patrick's long and happy career spanned numerous films, television shows and theatre productions. But an entire generation will remember him as the quintessential English gentleman John Steed in The Avengers.

John Dorney, script editor and lead writer for Big Finish's range of Avengers titles, writes in tribute:

"There are a lot of very good actors in the world. But it takes a special sort of performer to become an icon. Patrick Macnee was one such performer.

I've been watching a lot of The Avengers these last few years. And it's very clear to see how Macnee attained his mythic status. The perfect combination of man and role, his effortless charm and charisma, lights up the screen in each episode. Every one-liner is delivered with a roguish twinkle, yet he always manages to be the perfect English gentleman.

The fact that we are still telling stories about The Avengers fifty years later is a testament to the strength of his performance. So it's with huge regret that I doff my bowler hat, and raise a glass of champagne to the mighty Macnee. Rest in peace."

THE LOST EPISODES VOLUME 5 (JAN 2016) ANNOUNCED

Producer David Richardson with Anthony Howell (Dr Keel) and Julian Wadham (John Steed)

Ahead of July's fourth box set, today Big Finish Productions are pleased to announce details regarding the Fifth Volume of adventures of Steed and Keel...

Starring Julian Wadham as John Steed, Anthony Howell as Dr. David Keel and Lucy Briggs-Owen as Carol Wilson, The Avengers: The Lost Episodes Volume 5 brings to life four more classic episodes from the now sadly missing first series of the 1960's classic.

In a first for the range, each episode included in the set has been adapted by a different writer. As well as a script from the ever-talented John Dorney, Volume 5 also contains adaptations from Dan Starkey, Phil Mulryne and Rae Leaver.

Dan Starkey: "I've had great fun in contributing to this set, both as a performer and writing the reconstruction of Nightmare. It's been very helpful appearing as One Ten and numerous other characters across the range, as I've been able to absorb the feel of the series, but it's another step again actually reimagining a lost episode. John Dorney was of course extremely helpful talking me through some of the specifics of the format - the fact that we have to respect the nature of a script written for virtually live broadcast in 1961 with some of the technician ramifications that entails - and Ken Bentley was very incisive in his comments on the various drafts of my script - it's a lot leaner and more exciting as a result. As to the content, the synopsis of the story that I was working from is quite tantalising, but rather impressionistic in terms of the actual plot: I hope I've filled in the gaps in a satisfying way and I'm really looking forward to hearing the finished product! Certainly it was great fun writing a thoroughly unpleasant character like Reece, and Dr. Keel really does get knocked about in this story!"

But the latest set of stories posesd an interesting challenge for our writers - as while Girl on the Trapeze is an adaptation of the existing television episode, the remaining three stories no longer exist on film or as scripts. The episodes have been recreated by the writers, using all the reference material available and with the advice of Avengers experts Alan Hayes and Richard McGinlay.

5.1 Nightmare by Dan Starkey, from a storyline by Terence Feely
When one of his patients, an experimental scientist, goes missing, Dr Keel ends up impersonating him. But not all doctors are on the side of the angels.

5.2 Crescent Moon by Phil Mulryne, from a storyline by Geoffrey Bellman and John Whitney
On a Carribean Island, Steed finds himself caught up in a curious case of kidnapping, where if he wants to save a missing girl, he's got to find out what's really going on... and quickly.

5.3 Girl on the Trapeze by Dennis Spooner, adapted by Rae Leaver
The circus has come to town - but after Keel witnesses an apparent suicide, it becomes clear that the clowns are concealing something sinister behind the scenes.

5.4 Diamond Cut Diamond by John Dorney, from a storyline by Max Marquis
A smuggling ring is leaving a trail of bodies in its wake. Steed goes undercover as an air steward to investigate, but can he confront the culprit before it's his head on the block?

The Avengers - The Lost Episodes Volume 5 is released in January, and is available to pre-order now. Volume 4 will be released in July, with the three previous sets also available to order now.

Meanwhile, The Avengers: Steed and Mrs Peel - The Comic Adaptations Volume 1 is due for to begin release in April 2016, with a second set and accompanying graphic novel following in November 2016. All three releases can be pre-ordered today as part of a specially discounted bundle.

ALL OF SERIES 1 TO BE RECREATED ON AUDIO!

Big Finish Productions has signed an extended licence with STUDIOCANAL to produce full cast audio productions of the entire first season of the classic TV series The Avengers.

The Avengers first launched in 1961, and starred Ian Hendry as Dr David Keel and Patrick Macnee as the elusive and suave John Steed. Beginning with the murder of Keel's fiancée, and his sworn intent to avenge her death, that first year comprised 26 episodes. Sadly, only two of them exist in their entirety as film prints (Girl on the Trapeze and The Frighteners), while just the first act remains of the opening episode, Hot Snow.

Box Set One of The Avengers: The Lost Episodes, starring Anthony Howell as Dr Keel and Julian Wadham as Steed, is available now and has received much acclaim. It comprises the episodes Hot Snow, Brought to Book, Square Root of Evil and One for the Mortuary.

"A minor triumph"SFX Magazine

"If you were ever a fan of the TV series, are interested in the early 1960s or
just want a few hours of cracking drama to listen to, this is a must buy."
Starburst Magazine

"A great success: Howell and Wadham work very well together as Keel and Steed;
the scripts have been brought to life as authentically as possible,
the music feels like the scores from 1961... It's reawakened a love for The Avengers -
and now I've got 139 other episodes on the way...!"
Sci-Fi Bulletin

In total, seven box sets of The Avengers: The Lost Episodes will now be released at six monthly intervals until January 2017. All of the 24 missing episodes will now be recreated from surviving scripts and storylines, while both Girl on the Trapeze and The Frighteners will be remade on audio to complete the series.

The director is Ken Bentley, the script editor is John Dorney and the producer is David Richardson. The executive producers are Nicholas Briggs and Jason Haigh-Ellery.

All surviving episodes of The Avengers Series 1-6 are available on DVD from STUDIOCANAL.

THE AVENGERS LICENSED! (Official PR)

Big Finish Productions is delighted to announce that it has signed a licence with STUDIOCANAL to produce full cast audio productions of 12 lost episodes of the classic TV series The Avengers.

Discover the very beginning of this television classic, as we meet John Steed for the first time! Lost for over fifty years, the missing episodes have been lovingly recreated on audio from the original scripts.

Working from the surviving scripts, Big Finish will be presenting the adaptations in three four-disc box sets. The scripts will be adapted, with minimal changes, by John Dorney, the director is Ken Bentley and the producer is David Richardson.
